Match Report - St. Johnstone B

For the second year running East Fife were pulled out of the hat for the SPFL Trust Trophy alongside St Johnstone B. Last season East Fife were 1-0 victors against the young Perth side, however with a change of manager and various players since, the Fifers were looking to repeat the victory this time out. 

Scott Mercer claimed the captain’s armband in the absence of Stewart Murdoch and 4 changes were made to the starting team that overcame Forfar late on at the weekend. Alan Trouten, Jack Healy, Mikey Cunningham and Lucas Williamson all were integrated into the starting line-up with Ryan Schiavone and Kieran Millar dropping to the bench. Murdoch missed out due to work commitments with St. Johnstone loan duo of Alex Ferguson and Taylor Steven unable to play against their parent club.

Cunningham got the game underway for East Fife. With East Fife controlling the ball at the back, the first ten minutes went by fairly uneventfully. The Saints had a few minor chances, however nothing to seriously challenge Allan Fleming in the East Fife goal.

The first real chance of the opening 15 fell to the hands of East Fife as Mercer sent a beautifully lofted ball over the top of the Saints defence through to Scott Shepherd who was taken out by Saint stopper Jack Willis at he attempted to round the keeper, giving the referee little option but to point to the spot. Penalty specialist, Trouten stepped up and rolled the ball into the bottom right corner, despite the ‘keeper guessing the correct way, giving East Fife an early advantage. 

St Johnstone’s best chance of the game came in the 35th minute as Max Kucheriavyi, on the left wing, passed into an unmarked John Moreland in the centre of the box, but he failed to get a clean connection on the ball, resulting in a comfortable save for Fleming. After a monotonous first half, being mostly dominated in possession by the Fifers, the referee blows the half time whistle.

One change was made at the break as Trouten was replaced by Millar. The intensity was clearly upped from both teams after half time with The referee dished out his first yellow card of the game in the 54th minute with Scott Shepherd the recipient for dissent. Shepher was replaced by Schiavone shortly after.

2 minutes after Schiavone’s entrance to the game, East Fife doubled their advantage when a deep corner from Balde was only partially cleared to the feet of Scott Mercer at the back post who sent an excellent strike into the bottom corner giving East Fife a 2-0 lead.

The young Saints finished the match as Liam Parker is sent off for a second booking for tripping up Balde. The red card gave East Fife a stronger hold on the game, as the dominance from the Methil men continued. East Fife had a few good chances one being a Mercer free kick which found Sam Denham at the back post however his headed effort hit the side netting.

Stevie Crawford made his third substitute of the match when Liam Newton made way for Brendan Ramsay, making his competitive debut for the club. 2 minutes later East Fife added a third as Jack Healy played in Mikey Cunningham who ended up with a one on one with Wills to slot past the keepers near post gaining his first competitive goal of his East Fife career.

In the 85th minute, Balde was brought off to a standing ovation after an incredible performance with Sam Martin came on, also making his competitive debut for the club and made in instant impact.

After various blocked and saved shots in the Saint’s penalty area, the ball fall to Healy who also saw his effort blocked however it was fell into the path of Sam, who had a gaping goal in front of him, to slot it home to make it 4-0.

Late on St. Johnstone B almost added a consolation however Fleming was able to make the save. The referee blew his whistle for full time ending the night 4-0 to the Fifers. East Fife will find out who they play in the third round of the challenge cup on Monday including the possibility of a trip to either Wales or Northern Ireland.

The Methil men have the long journey to Stranraer to look forward to on Saturday as the team hope to get a result and performance for the traveling supporters to enjoy.

We welcome St. Johnstone B to the Locality Hub Bayview this evening in the second round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

Squad News

There are no fresh injury concern ahead of tonight’s game however Alex Ferguson and Taylor are both unable to play against their parent side.

Due to work commitments, Stewart Murdoch and Pat Slattery will also miss out tonight.

Manager Stevie Crawford noted the importrance of utilising the squad tonight to gives the boys the necessary game time needed for the challenges we are going to face in the coming weeks. 

Team Colours

East Fife will be in our traditional home colours of black/gold strips, black shorts and black stockings with the goalkeeper in all-yellow.

St. Johnstone will also be in their traditional colours of blue strips, white shorts and blue stockings with the goalkeeper in all red.

The sides also met in this competition last season with East Fife progressing to the second round thanks to a first half Scott Mercer header.

Match Report - Forfar Athletic

East Fife took on Forfar Athletic in the 4th league game of the season. Previously, East Fife picked up all three points at the Reigart Stadium against Albion Rovers following a 1-0 win. Stevie Crawford and company were keen to replicate the antics of last weekend and pick up maximum points against the Loons. 

One change was made to the starting line-up that overcame Albion Rovers with Pat Slattery making way for Scott Shepherd who missed last weekend through concussion. Summer signing Alan Trouten was named as a substitute after missing out a few weeks due to injury.

Forfar got the ball rolling, and it was East Fife who had the more positive start of the two teams. The first chance of the game fell to the hands of Scott Mercer in the fifth minute. Mercer’s free kick from around 20 yards forced McCallum to make a save low down to his left, which he pushed around the post and behind for a corner to the Fifers.

Eight minutes later, Forfar won a free kick from a closer distance, however Allan Fleming stopped Slater’s effort from rippling the nets and the ball was cleared up the pitch by Alex Ferguson. 

East Fife really pilled on the pressure at the thirty-minute mark with two brilliant chances go in front. The first was through Aaron Steele as he picked up a loose ball in the box from Ferguson’s corner, although Steele put a little too much power on the ball and it narrowly goes over for a goal kick.

The better of the two chances was a counterattack to Forfar’s own counterattack, when Joap Balde picked up the ball in the centre circle. With options either side. Balde drove forward and passed to Ryan Schiavone on the left, who sent a first-time drilled pass into the 6-yard box for Shepherd, who got a shot away but Brindley blocks the effort and pushes it behind for a corner.  

With a minute until half time, Balde created a golden opportunity for himself to give the Fifers the lead when, with a good touch, he skipped past Moore to give himself a great sight of goal but was denied by a last-ditch block from Nditi which prevented an almost certain goal. After a series of uneventful corners for East Fife the referee blew up for half time. 

Half Time: East Fife 0-0 Forfar Athletic

Five minutes into the second half, the first booking of the game was dished out to Forfar’s Craig Slater for a cynical tackle. The first chance of the second half fell to the visitors a minute later when former Fifer Nathan Flanagan found himself on the right flank and whipped in a cross that was met by McCluskey however his touch is a bit heavy, and Fleming gathered safely. 

On the hour mark, Stevie Crawford made his first substitute of the game as Schiavone made way for Taylor Steven. Instantly after the substitution, Steven’s well taken corner led to a goalmouth scramble in the 6-yard box provoked by a Mercer diving header, however Forfar manage to clear the ball to safety. From the clearance, Forfar almost caught East Fife off guard which gave Flanagan a sight of goal but his effort is dragged wide of the post to the relief of the East Fife supporters. 

In the 65th minute, Alan Trouten was brought on to replace Ferguson. A short while later the third and final substitution was made as Jack Healy replaced Shepherd.

As the clock hit 80 minutes the tide turned in Forfar’s favour, as the Angus club really tried to push for a winner but nothing majorly challenged Fleming in the East Fife goal. 

In the final minute of normal time, Balde was taken down inside the box by a rash chal;lenge from Moore and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Excitement brewed within the home end as Trouten stepped up to take the spot kick. Trouten sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to slot the penalty kick into the bottom right corner to give East Fife the lead late on.

The referee blew this whistle a little while after ending a game. East Fife were predominantly the better side over the 90 minutes, whilst Forfar had a few good chances here and there. Ultimately Trouten’s penalty secured the win late on to give East Fife all three points.

East Fife’s next game is again at Bayview on the Tuesday as Crawford’s men take on St Johnstone B in the SPFL Trust Trophy.
