The visiting fans from Coatbridge arrived in Methil hoping that their team would clinch the title but their celebrations will have to wait at least another week after East Fife produced a very professional performance to give their play-off ambitions a real boost.
What was even more impressive about the victory over the top of the table side was that the Fifers were dealt a few blows prior to the match with a number of injury call-offs. Liam Smith, Alan Cook, Lewis Barr and Stevie Campbell were all unavailable which meant that Gary Naysmith was only able to name four substitutes whilst Albion Rovers had the relative luxury of having seven players on the bench.
Early on in the match the home side went near to getting the opener when a wind assisted corner from Ross Brown bounced off the top of the woodwork.
Other than that both sides struggled to create any clear opportunities until the half hour mark when the deadlock was broken. Kevin Smith picked up a long ball forward before taking the ball to the by-line and then cutting it back to Sean Dickson who managed to beat Neil Parry in the Albion goal.
Shortly before the break the Wee Rovers should have scored an equaliser when Edward Ferns was presented with a gilt-edged chance six yards out but fortunately for the Fifers he blasted the ball over.
In the second period East Fife had a penalty shout when Michael Dunlop appeared to handle the ball in his area but much to the dismay of the home support referee Alan Newlands was having none of it.
Albion Rovers rallied in the latter stage of the match applying a fair amount of pressure on their hosts, with Chris Cadden going close on a couple of occasions. Firstly he hit the post and then he struck a half-volley from the edge of the area that went just over the bar.
